Skateboarding Around the World: CHINA
Skateboarding has experienced a resurgence of popularity around the world since the 1990s and the debut of the X Games. It appeals to people of many different cultures and socioeconomic strata, and skateparks are becoming increasingly popular throughout the world. China has the distinction of having the world's largest skatepark.
Built in 2005 by SMP International, an Australian-owned skateboarding company, it boasts 12,000 square meters with a 5,000-seat stadium. It has the world's biggest vert ramp and largest concrete skate bowl. It is located in New Jiangwan City, outside Shanghai, and hosts a contest called Shanghai Showdown each year. In the same year that the park opened, Danny Way completed an amazing feat by jumping the Great Wall of China on his skateboard. He is the first person ever to do so. It brought worldwide attention to China and put a spotlight on the growing popularity of the sport.
Ironically, prior to 2000, even though many of the boards were manufactured in China, one had to import a skateboard at exorbitant prices in order to skate in China. That has changed with the advent of domestic skateboard companies in China, the first of which was She Hui (Society) Skateboards. The affordability of domestic skateboards has greatly contributed to the increasing popularity of the sport in China.
Skateboarding Has No Age Limits
You don't have to be a kid to learn to ride a skateboard. Why start after 30, 40 or even 50 years of age? Why not? Regardless of your age, physical abilities, or agility, there is a style of skateboarding to fit everyone! Not only will the kids think you're cool, it's good for your heart and soul!
Check out the links below for some great stories on riding skateboards for the first time after 30 years of age. Let it be known that you're never too old to start skateboarding. Tony Hawk and Danny Way are two of the top professional skateboarders today, and they are both over 30 years of age. In fact, Tony was born in 1968...you do the math!
