Skateboarding Shoes
Skate Shoes
Skateboard shoes come in many varieties and sizes, depending on the manufacturer. Always select shoes that were made for skateboarding. Skateboard shoes can be found in skateboard shops, internet-based skateboard stores, and in some department or athletic shoe stores.
Traits of a Skate Shoe
They have a larger surface area on the soles; they are soft and grippy; flat-bottomed (no contours), with deep lines or grid patterns to keep you from slipping; they "flex" to the contour of your skateboard for maximum grip, comfort and performance; and lastly, the heels are flat or sunk-in to provide stability and support, keeping your weight distribution centered and not forward like most athletic shoes with higher heels.
Some models have extra padding and support around the ankles, Achilles tendon and over the instep of your foot. Added stitching, thick rubber trim, and layered leather in areas most prone to wear and tear are additional benefits of true skateboard shoes and will help you keep them longer.
Skateboard shoes come in a broad range of styles, construction materials, feature configurations and pricing:
High-top skateboard shoes provide more support and ankle protection while low or mid-top skateboard shoes add more flexibility with less support.
Leather or suede shoes with thicker trim and triple stitching will last longer but will cost more.
If you have weak ankles or are a beginner, go with mid-top or high-top shoes.
Children 8 years or younger should go with mid or high-tops.
Street skaters or park riders can go with any shoe configuration.
If you're riding big terrain such as pools or pipes, or plan to race on your board at high-speeds, the bulky leather mid to high-top shoe is recommended.
Intermediate to advanced skaters who ride big transitions like those found on vert ramps, pools and in cement skateparks should seriously consider higher-end leather skateboard shoes with maximum ankle support and padding. They will take the abuse of tougher terrain much better than say, a canvas shoe with no padding.
The bottom line: select the right shoe for your style and level of skating! It is also good to keep in mind to use the size charts for each retailer if you are purchasing from an online store.
